GUAM – Guam High School junior Reena Sotomil has been recognized as one of the Top Ten Finalists in the 2024–2025 Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) Veterans Appreciation Challenge. This national competition, organized by Future Engineers in collaboration with the AEOP, invites students from grades 4 through 12 to design a 3D-printable pin that honors and expresses gratitude to U.S. military veterans.
Sotomil initially approached the challenge as a typical classroom assignment.
“I thought of this as just another assignment that Mr. Diaz had given us,” she said.
However, her design, which pays tribute to all branches of the U.S. military and incorporates the colors of the American flag, ultimately stood out among hundreds of entries nationwide. The pin features bold words recognizing the valor of veterans and symbolizes the virtues of perseverance, courage, and justice.
Her entry was selected based on its quality, creativity, and emotional impact. Her pin will be printed and distributed to veterans at the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus, Ohio.
Sotomil shared she was surprised to have her design recognized.
“It caught me off guard, but I am so grateful to have gotten an opportunity to get my name out there in the engineering world,”Sotomil said. “Thank you to Mr. Diaz for teaching me all I know when it comes to engineering and thank you to my mother for continuing to push me to strive for the best.”
