The 2026 Far East Culinary Arts Competition brought together 11 talented teams from Pacific West, Pacific East, and Pacific South districts, and – for the first time ever – a local Japanese high school, Fussa High School, also joined the competition.

With cultural exchange, industry-level learning experiences, and high-energy challenges, the event showcased the very best student culinary talent across the region.

Day 1: Arrival and Inspiration at Cup Noodles Museum

Teams touched down in Tokyo and wasted no time diving into the culinary world. Immediately after landing, students traveled to Yokohama for an immersive tour of the Cup Noodles Museum. This hands-on experience gave them insight into food innovation, product development, and the global influence of instant noodles while setting the tone for an exciting and educational event.

Day 2: Behind-the-scenes AAFES Operations and U.S. Coast Guard Collaboration

The second day delivered a full-scale look into real-world food industry operations. Students toured several AAFES facilities, including the bakery plant, where they observed large-scale production; airline catering operations, learning how meals are mass-produced and safely prepared; and food court operations, exploring the service flow and business operations.

This year also featured a meaningful new collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard, which provided a professional-level plating workshop. Students gained hands-on experience with advanced presentation techniques while learning about culinary career opportunities within the Coast Guard.

AAFES generously donated all food used for the competition, heling ensure every team had access to high-quality ingredients while keeping the event cost-effective for participating schools.

Day 3: The Sweet and Savory Food Truck Competition

The final day brought excitement, creativity, and competitive spirit with the Sweet and Savory Food Truck Competition. All 12 teams presented their themed food trucks and signature dishes, aiming for the top honor.

Judging was conducted by more than 15 seasoned professionals, including Coast Guard chefs, Yokota Air Base food operation managers, DFAC and Commissary staff, and other culinary experts.

Yokota High School took first place with “The Cozy Mac Truck,” featuring its signature Mac and Cheese Balls with Steak entrée served with ranch sauce, strawberry vinaigrette mixed salad side dish, and cheesecake parfait dessert.

M.C. Perry High School took second place, with Kadena High School, Fussa High School, and Guam High School earning third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Zama Middle High School captured the People’s Choice Award for its outstanding display and creativity.

Many thanks to the dedicated students, educators, volunteer judges, and community partners who brought Far East Culinary Arts to new heights in 2026!
